Titans hang on for 8-6 win over Spartans

The Titans were paying their first visit of the season in South River to face their northern rivals, the Spartans.  The history between these two teams dictated close checking and tight scores.  But the game had a different look tonight as the Titans led 3-0 after the first and doubled it to 6-0 after the middle period.  They made it 7-0 only 45 sec into the 3rd.  Raffaele Izzo’s shutout bid was ruined as the Spartans finally solved the puzzle.  The Titans had a quick reply and made it 8-1 less than five minutes into the final frame. But then the Spartans mounted a comeback courtesy of some untimely penalties and proceeded to make a game of the what looked to be a rout.  The final score was 8-6 Titans. Titans goals came from Nicolas Proulx (2), Nico Wilton (2), Adrien Guenette, Hampus Fagrell, Guillaume Taupier & Ryder Murray.  Ryder Murray also had 4 assists.  That gives him 212 for his career and places tied in top spot for the all time lead in assists in the GMHL.  Spartans outshot the Titans 51-44. Ryder Murray was the first star and Nico Wilton earned the honors for the second star.  Raffaele Izzo got the victory.  Although allowing 6 goals in the final period, he was outstanding in the first 45 minutes making save after save to keep the Spartans off the scoresheet.  Titans will host 2 home games next weekend, first up on Friday oct 14 are the Parry Sound Islanders and followed by a visit on Saturday by the division leading and unbeaten New Tecumseth Civics.  Both games have an 8pm start.
